Naomi Christis, Ruben Beldé, and Femke Danckaers

On May 13th, Femke Danckaers, Naomi Christis , and Ruben Beldé received the prestigious "Belgian Industrial Research & Development (BiR&D) Interdisciplinary Master of Science Thesis Programme 2012"-award from Marc Van Den Neste (President of BiR&D) for their joint project "Anthropometrics 2.0". The award ceremony took place in the Diamond Building in Brussels under the watchful eye of FWO / FNRS and numerous representatives of the Belgian Industry (AGFA, Alcatel - Lucent, Umicore, UCB, Solvay, P&G,...) .

The students received this recognition for their joint work on the incorporation of 3D statistical shape models in the design process for wearable products. For each of the students, this led to the submission and successful defense of their Masters thesis for obtaining the degree of Master of Sciences in 2013. During their research, the students were guided by the research teams Vision Lab (Physics), CoSysLab (Applied Engineering) , and Product Development (Design Sciences).

In addition, their Anthropometrics 2.0 project led to a doctoral project for Femke (who is now at the Vision Lab) and a closer cooperation between Vision Lab and Product Development with a first joint project CADANS (IWT TETRA 2014-2016)

Geert Van Eyndhoven has developed an innovative method to create Shadow Art. Based on given shadows, he is able to create a 3D object that when shining light onto this object, shows these shadows. With his design, we recently won the Campuscrack Art Contest.

ASTRA-Toolbox Released

The ASTRA tomography group of the Vision Lab of the University of Antwerp has just released the ASTRA-Toolbox. This toolbox contains a collection of reconstruction algorithms, accessible through a MATLAB wrapper around the native C++ and CUDA code. Available algorithms include FBP, SIRT, SART, CGLS, etc. The forward and back projector can also be called separately, to enable building new algorithms. For most of the algorithms, an optimized GPU implementation is available for maximal performance. Another important highlight is that the scanner geometry can be highly flexible, with completely free detector and source positioning, in addition to the classical geometries (parallel, fan, and cone beam).

A figure from the research article titled Multisource Classification of Color and Hyperspectral Images Using Color Attribute Profiles and Composite Decision Fusion, authored by Guy Thoonen, Zahid Mahmood, Stijn Peeters and Paul Scheunders, made it to the cover of the April 2012 Special Issue on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (J-STARS). ISMRM MERIT AWARD: summa cum laude

Ben Jeurissen received the Summa Cum Laude Merit Award for the 20th Annual ISMRM meeting for his abstract entitled HARDI-based methods for fiber orientation estimation.

Ontdek de wereld van genetisch onderzoek, diagnostische tests, biomedische beeldvorming en de bestrijding van bacteriële en virale infecties.

De Universiteit Antwerpen staat bekend om haar biotechnologisch onderzoek, niet alleen binnen het VIB - Departement Moleculaire Genetica onder de leiding van prof. dr. Christine Van Broeckhoven, maar ook in het onderzoeksexcellentiecentrum VAXINFECTIO met het Laboratorium Medische Microbiologie onder de leiding van prof. dr. Herman Goossens . Dit wordt gecombineerd met onderzoek naar beeldvormingstechnieken binnen het Bio-Imaging Lab onder de leiding van prof. dr. Annemie Van Der Linden, waar nauw wordt samengewerkt met het Visielab onder leiding van prof. dr. Jan Sijbers, het Universitair Ziekenhuis en het Molecular Imaging Center Antwerp (MICA).

Via onder meer rondleidingen, posterpresentaties, documentaires, gesprekken met onderzoeksverpleegkundigen en demonstraties kunt u kennismaken met het onderzoek naar ziektes als dementie, Parkinson, epilepsie, Charcot-Marie-Tooth en met de rol van beeldvormingstechnieken bij het opsporen van deze ziektes. Daarnaast kunt u ook komen bekijken hoe een doktersvisite er in de toekomst zal uitzien.

Rondleidingen door de laboratoria zijn in beperkte groepen en starten op gezette tijden. U kunt zich ter plaatse inschrijven. Er is een beperkte capaciteit dus wees er op tijd bij!
