Brief CV

Joost Batenburg graduated in Mathematics (2002) and Computer Science (2003) at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. From 2002 to 2006 he was a Ph.D. student at the University of Leiden and CWI in Amsterdam. In March 2006 he was awarded the Philips Mathematics Prize for Ph.D. Students and in January 2007 the C.J. Kok Prize. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2006 with the thesis "Network Flow Algorithms for Discrete Tomography". He currently is an FWO Postdoctoral Fellow at the Vision Lab of the University of Antwerp, Belgium. With Jan Sijbers, he leads the ASTRA group, which focuses on developing new algorithms and techniques for tomographic reconstruction at all scales.

Research interests

My research interests include:
  • Discrete tomography and other subjects in tomographic image reconstruction
  • Applications of discrete tomography in materials science and medical imaging
  • Combinatorial optimization, modern optimization heuristics such as evolutionary algorithms
  • Image processing and computer vision
  • Inverse problems

Interesting links

  • The ASTRA research group recently launched a website around our desktop supercomputer called FASTRA (also available in Dutch). FASTRA contains four dual-GPU graphics cards; it outperforms a large cluster for our applications.
